Road Cycling and Mountain Biking in Snowdonia

Road Cycling

Snowdonia is a firm favourite for road cyclists. The Tour of Britain regularly comes here and tackles the infamous Llanberis pass. Two very scenic circular routes can be done from the cottage - The Tour of The Glyderau via Bethesda, Llanberis and Llanberis Pass and The Tour of Snowdon via Llanberis Pass, Llanberis and Beddgelert.

Recently, two cycle ways have been set up in honour of local boy Sir David Brailsford of British Cycling and Tour de France fame.  The two ‘Ffordd Brailsford Way’ cycle routes are 50 miles and 75 miles long.  The 75 mile route passes by Carreg Cottage and the 50 mile route can easily be accessed at the Pen-y-Gwryd.  Ffordd Brailsford Way Cycle Routes Snowdonia

Mountain Biking

Trail Centres

Snowdonia is blessed with some world class purpose built mountain bike centres. The closest is Gwydir Forest, Llanrwst which has an excellent red route and some forest trails too. Then there is the connoisseur’s red trail of Penmachno but, a word of warning, be prepared to get wet! A little further afield are the centres of Coed y Brenin and Llandegla - both centres have many trails for all ages and abilities plus a café, bike store and bike rentals - and for downhill enthusiasts there is Antur Stiniog near Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Snowdon Challenge and other Natural Trails

Ready for the Snowdon Challenge? It is possible to ride to the summit of Snowdon but please note there are voluntary restrictions in place - see https://www.mbwales.com/listings/snowdon/

In addition to the centres, there are natural trails on bridleways etc. to be discovered.

Guiding

To get the most of the mountain biking in the area you may want to hire a local guide.  We recommend Tom Hutton MTB Guide.

Bike Hire

Not got your own bike.  Bikes can be hired at Beics Betws in Betws-y-Coed and at most of the mountain bike centres.
